This is definitely the most unique room I’ve ever worked on; from its sprawling 13’ tall slanted ceiling and incredible hangout nook above the closet, it truly is a gem of a kids room! I was brought on to help this family with a full second floor renovation in their newly purchased home and when I stepped into this room for the first time, I instantly saw the potential to transform it into something magical…

We started by giving the ceiling a fresh coat of mauve paint to give the room a cozier feel, and boy did it ever help (we went with Mauve Mist by Benjamin Moore). I also knew the three pot lights above the bed could be much more fabulous, so we switched them out for brass swing arm sconces which we were able to adjust to work with the slanted ceiling lines.

We were initially supposed to repurpose an existing bunk bed, but couldn’t get it up the stairs… so I sourced a canopy bed in whethered white instead. This turned out to be the happiest of accidents because I was able to hang tie tab curtain panels from the canopy to give this tween the coolest and dreamiest sleeping quarters. The light blue, pink and purple bows bring so much personality to the room! We also repurposed an existing nightstand and dresser set and sourced a beautiful bookcase with beadboard detailing, to give this avid reader ample space for her growing book collections.

The crème de la crème is definitely the hangout nook above the closet! We started by removing the hinged doors, trimming out the opening and painting the cedar plank interior to match the walls. We repurposed my clients old staircase spindles to create a railing and even used leftover flooring to give this spot a more polished look! I also wanted to add a reading light up there without having to go through the trouble of wiring it, so we used a rechargeable light bulb which came with a remote with various colour settings — it’s definitely a fun touch for a kids room! Scroll down to see the remarkable ‘before & after’ shot!

Some other favourite elements from this project are the floral metallic sheet set, brass scalloped mirror and the adorable table lamp that I sourced from HomeSense! This room now has such a beautiful calming feel and I am so happy to know my mini client is enjoying it so much.
