It isn’t often that I get to work with a 13 foot slanted accent wall and as soon as I saw this room, I knew it was calling for something pretty special. My client wanted a relaxed feel that could grow with her toddler over the years while still feeling like a really playful space he could connect with now. We chose a subtle safari animal mural with a beautiful green sketching detail which complements the blue, sage green and yellow colour palette so beautifully. Choosing a wallpaper with an interesting pattern that’s still soft in tonality is a great way to add impact without it feeling too overpowering. The introduction of light wood tones through the crib, dresser and low activity table also helps to soften the design and brings warmth to the space. And I just love how the muslin green crib sheet, striped linen duvet cover set and tiny house pillow add texture and contrasting patterns to the room.

With a rather square footprint, a standard rug didn’t quite fully cover the entire room so we layered in a round ABC rug on top of the square tile rug to ground the space and provide extra coziness for playtime. I’m always looking for ways to add function to my designs — here we added a canvas bean bag with open shelving units to provide plenty of room to read, learn and explore. I love all the playful accents that were carefully layered into the room too; like a fun art print, adorable hand carved wall hooks, a personalized name pennant, the cutest raffia lion head and other speciality toys that coordinate perfectly with the room’s colour palette.

The end result is a soft yet adventurous room, filled to the brim with imagination!
